Canadian patent granted for 十博体育鈥檚 spent nuclear fuel recycling process

Saint John, New Brunswick (Thursday Jan 11, 2024) 鈥 十博体育Canada Inc. (十博体育) is pleased to announce that a patent for its innovative spent nuclear fuel recycling process has been granted in Canada.

Invented by 十博体育 co-founder and Chief Scientist Dr. Ian Scott, the patent covers 十博体育鈥檚 process for converting any uranium oxide fuel into molten salt reactor fuel, known as WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS).

In the process, spent nuclear fuel is converted into several parts. Transuranics 鈥 the long-lived, man-made elements 鈥 along with some uranium and fission products are extracted into a salt which forms the fuel for 十博体育鈥檚 reactor, avoiding the need for high-purity separations. 十博体育鈥檚 SSR-W and some other reactors can use this fuel, converting it to clean energy while destroying these long-lived waste products created by nuclear fission.

Uranium, close to its natural state and considered Intermediate to Low Level Waste, is a major by-product of the process that can have other uses. A small by-product of the fission products can be disposed directly or used as a heat source for remote applications, until it has decayed and then contains valuable stable elements.

十博体育鈥檚 process is notable as conventional spent fuel reprocessing is complex and expensive. Conventional reprocessing either directly produces pure plutonium, or can be altered to produce pure plutonium, which could be misused for nefarious purposes. In contrast, the WATSS process is unable to produce pure plutonium, making the process far safer for current and future generations. This also makes the process simpler and less expensive.

鈥淭his patent is testament to 十博体育鈥檚 commitment to innovation and to finding improvements in existing nuclear energy processes,鈥 said Rory O鈥橲ullivan, CEO, 十博体育. 鈥淲aste is one of the most important considerations in the nuclear industry, and 十博体育鈥檚 process offers an elegant and cost-effective solution to safely reducing waste stockpiles.鈥

The patent joins 十博体育鈥檚 robust suite of existing patents, all evidence of the company鈥檚 groundbreaking nuclear technologies. It is one of over 600 patents granted to Dr. Scott.

About 十博体育:鈥鈥&苍产蝉辫;

十博体育 is a Canadian IP company and nuclear technology leader that has caught the attention of governments, utilities and investors worldwide. It is developing three unique technologies: a Stable Salt Reactor 鈥 Wasteburner (SSR-W) that uses recycled nuclear waste as fuel; a WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS) process for recycling nuclear waste to produce SSR-W fuel; and GridReserve thermal energy storage tanks, enabling the SSR-W to act as a peaking plant. 十博体育 was selected by NB Power to progress development of its reactor technology in New Brunswick, Canada, with the goal of deploying first-of-a-kind SSR-W, WATSS and GridReserve units at the Point Lepreau site.
